A buddy and I attended the Canepa Cars and Coffee event on Saturday and it was quite an experience to behold. I counted 4 Porsche 959s, a P1, a P1 GTR and several Porsche 917Ks. The event was held in the parking lot but also allowed for full access to the garage, showroom and museum. Here are some pics I was able to capture.

Thanks! I use a Canon 6D with a 50mm f/1.8.

Me and my Nikon D3100 w/ kit lens are jealous. And I’m insanely jealous of that aperture. I need some prime lens in my life.

I know that feel. I was using a Sony NEX-3 with kit 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 prior to this. The low aperture is amazing. Luckily the 50mm primes are great value for money coming in at about $100 in the Canon realm.

Looks like it’s $50-100 to get a Nikkor 50mm prime for my camera. So very tempting.

A quick read suggests that the 6D is a little more plasticky full-frame camera body. Is that 50mm L? Your indoor photos are standouts. What ISO did you use?

How much postprocessing are you doing?

Lots, because the dynamic range on my camera is complete garbage.

It’s actually a pretty robust camera. The only plastics parts are the top of the body and the buttons. The rest of the body is made of magnesium alloy. Nope, just a plastic fantastic 50mm f/1.8 STM. Great bang for your buck in my opinion.
Thanks! It varied depending on which part of the warehouse I was in. If I remember correctly it was between 1600 and 6400. You can check my Flickr link in the post to find the exact specs.

Not a crazy amount. Just some highlight and black level adjustment. Then some split-toning for the look I usually go for.

Do it. The 50mm primes capture light in such a beautiful way. I used to have a Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.4 lens when I had a Sony a7. That lens captured images with such beauty. The downside was manual focus only and the Sony was not to my liking.

My brother and I own a lot of Canon bodies and an assortment of non-Canon lenses, including the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-IS. This is a good lens, but does not perform well in low light conditions. My theory is that the poor performance in low light has less to do with the lens and more to do with the APS-C sensor. We have found the 50D to do as well as any of them, even the 7D in my experience. I own both. I also own a 5Dmki and keep a Sigma f/1.4 prime on it. There is a “buttery” quality to the bokeh (out-of-focus background) on the 5D that I can really only attribute to the full-frame sensor, and that same quality is apparent in your excellent car photos. In fact, as you say that your lens is plastic-fantastic, this only reinforces my theory about the full-frame sensor. The only bite about my 5D is that the ISO maximum is 1600.

I agree. The full frame sensor definitely helps with low light and the creamy bokeh. I have to use a 70D on occasion and it just doesn’t have that same magic as the 6D. I don’t get as inspired either. Although that might also be because I don’t take pictures of cars with the 70D.
The 6D is a monster in low light too. My coworker and I were comparing it to his Nikon D800 and the lowlight on the 6D was less noisy at the same ISO setting.

Do you have any experience or knowledge of how the 6D compares with the 5Dmkii?

In Lightroom there’s a menu that allows you to change the tone of the highlights and shadows separately. I generally like to fiddle with it when it’s a cloudy day to further give the image a more rainy feel by giving the highlights an aqua tone and the shadows a greener tone. You can change those two independent to your liking.

I haven’t had the opportunity to play with a 5D2 but my research on it turned up that the 6D is basically a 5D2 in a hybrid 5D and 70D body. The autofocus is exactly the same between them if I am not mistaken. The 6D has slightly better low light performance and a few modern features such as wifi and GPS (I just leave those off on the 6D honestly).
I was actually considering between these two when I picked up the 6D. My reasoning was the slightly better low light performance and the fact that I could pick up the 6D new versus the 5D2 I could only get used at the time. And the price difference was minimal between those two options.

I’ll have to look at that. You could, for instance, give the suggestion that the sky was sort of orangey?

Low light performance seems to be the Achilles heel of the APS-C sensor.

You could try to make the sky more orange with that but I think there’s a different way of doing it without making the rest of the image have an orange highlight. I’ve never tried it though.

Sorry, not interested in another 50mm. If you had a Canon 85mm then I’d be interested though.
You could sell it to KEH though. They’re quite splendid for selling stuff.
